Sierra Nevada Skiing with Competa Escapes

Love skiing? Have you ever skied just a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean? No, then you are missing out for sure!

Skiing in the sunshine!

Situated in Spain’s Granada province, the Sierra Nevada resort’s Southern location guarantees sunshine throughout your trip. A perfect way to top us your ski tan! Plus, if not all of your group are skiing fans (apparently some people might not be) then there is a variety of activities. Sierra Nevada is one of Europe’s highest resorts and typically has a very long season.

About the resort!

Founded in 1964, the resort is one of the best and highest in Europe.  Due to its altitude it enjoys a long season from November to May. Sierra Nevada translates to ‘Snowy Mountain Range’. Its base altitude is 2100m and its top station is at an altitude of 3300m.  The general slope orientation is NW & W!

Skiing on a budget!

The Sierra Nevada ski resort has one of the best spring snow conditions in Europe and is still very reasonably priced compared to its European counterparts! With many winter/spring flights running from all over the UK, flights are competitively priced too.

Tell us about the skiing?

The ski terrain is overlooked by Veleta peak, standing at 3398m it is the third highest in Spain. Due to the altitude, the ski slopes are above the tree line and rather than being narrow prepared tracks they are ski fields. Particularly well suited to nervous skiers. For children there are family zones which are regularly patrolled.  In addition, there is the Pista del Mar, a themed slope line with numerous objects related to the sea. Obstacle courses are created to enhance even further children’s experiences. There is a creche and a dreamland snow garden for little ones. On Thursdays and Saturdays (subject to weather conditions) there is night skiing from 19:00 to 22:00.

Pistes and Lifts

There are 131 pistes in total, so suitable for all levels! 19 green runs, 45 blue runs, 53 red runs, 7 black runs and 7 snow park runs. The longest piste is El Aquila with a length of 6.329 km. There is a cross country skiing circuit, 2.5kms in length and a ski touring trail of 6.224 kms with a 920m vertical assent. There are 21 lifts, Gondolas, chairlifts, drag lift and conveyor belts. Lifts are open from 09:00 to 17:00. Skiing is always guaranteed as staff work tirelessly.  During the evenings they maintain the slopes using one of the most advanced snow making systems in existence.

What other activities are there?

Take part in fun activities like ski bikes, inner tubing, ice skating and a roller-sled (a roller coaster and bob-sled combination) all found in the Mirlo Blanco recreation zone! One of the favourite activities is the Sulayr Freestyle park with a 165m long half-pipe. 1 mini park, medium and advanced difficulty areas covering 4 interlinked sections.  Consisting of a full range of jumps and rails, incorporating Europe’s longest slopestyle run with the possibility of linking up to 46 different modules in one run!
